 (Lech Lecha (Get thee out) - the third Portion in Genesis)
 And the Lord said to Abram:
Go out of your country,
and from your birthplace,
and from your father's house,
to the land
which I will show you. |
בראשית, לך לך
 ויאמר יהוה אל אברם
לך לך מארצך
וממולדתך
ומבית אביך
אל הארץ
אשר אראך |

And I will make you
a great nation,
and I will bless you,
and make your name great;
and you will become a blessing. |
ואעשך
לגוי גדול
ואברכך
ואגדלה שמך
והיה ברכה |

And I will bless
those that bless you,
and the ones that curse you,
I will curse;
and in you shall be blessed
all the families of the earth. |

מברכיך
ומקללך
אאר
ונברכו בך
כל משפחת האדמה |

So Abram went
as the Lord had told him;
and Lot went with him,
and Abram was seventy five years old
at the time he left Haran. |
וילך אברם
כאשר דבר אליו יהוה
וילך אתו לוט
ואברם בן חמש שנים ושבעים שנה
בצאתו מחרן |

And Abram took
his wife Sarai,
and his brother's son Lot,
and all their possessions
which they had acquired,
and the (lit; soul) converts
that they had made in Haran;
and they left
to go to the land of Canaan;
and they came
into the land of Canaan. |
ויקח אברם
את שרי אשתו
ואת לוט בן אחיו
ואת כל רכושם
אשר רכשו
ואת הנפש
אשר עשו בחרן
ויצאו
ללכת ארצה כנען
ויבאו
ארצה כנען |

And Abram passed through the land
up to (where) Shechem is,
up to the terebinth of Moreh.
And the Canaanites were in the land at that time. |
ויעבר אברם בארץ
עד מקום שכם
עד אלון מורה
והכנעני אז בארץ |

And the Lord appeared to Abram,
and said:
To your seed
I will give this land;
and he built there
an altar to the Lord,
who appeared to him. |
וירא יהוה אל אברם
ויאמר
לזרעך
אתן את הארץ הזאת
ויבן שם
מזבח ליהוה
הנראה אליו |

And he went from there
to the mountain
to the east of Beth El,
and set his tent,
with Beth El on the west,
and Ai on the east;
and he built there
an altar to the Lord,
and called to the Lord by name. |
ויעתק משם
ההרה
מקדם לבית אל
ויט אהלה
בית אל מים
והעי מקדם
ויבן שם
מזבח ליהוה
ויקרא בשם יהוה |

And Abram travelled
carrying on towards the south.

And there was a famine in the land;
and Abram went down to Egypt
to stay there;
for the famine was (very) severe
in the land. |
ויהי רעב בארץ
וירד אברם מצרימה
לגור שם
כי כבד הרעב
בארץ |

And it was,
as he approached
the entrance into Egypt,
he said
to his wife Sarai:
Now I know
that you are a very attractive woman. |
ויהי
כאשר הקריב
לבוא מצרימה
ויאמר
אל שרי אשתו
הנה נא ידעתי
כי אשה יפת מראה את |

And it could be,
that (when) the Egyptians see you,
they will say:
This is his wife;
and they will kill me,
but keep you alive. |
והיה
כי יראו אתך המצרים
ואמרו
אשתו זאת
והרגו אתי
ואתך יחיו |

Please say,
you are my sister;
that it will be well for me
and for your sake,
that I may stay alive
because of you. |
אמרי נא
אחתי את
למען ייטב לי
בעבורך
וחיתה נפשי
בגללך |

(Start of second aliyah)
And it happened,
that when Abram entered Egypt,
and the Egyptians saw
the woman
that she was very beautiful. |
שני
ויהי
כבוא אברם מצרימה
ויראו המצרים
את האשה
כי יפה הוא מאד |

And Pharoah's ministers saw her,
and praised her to Pharoah;
and the woman was taken
to Pharoah's house. |
ויראו אתה שרי פרעה
ויהללו אתה אל פרעה
ותקח האשה
בית פרעה |

And Abram was treated well
because of her
and he received
sheep, and oxen,
and donkeys,
and servants , and maids,
and asses, and camels. |
ולאברם היטיב
בעבורה
ויהי לו
צאן ובקר
וחמרים
ועבדים ושפחת
ואתנת וגמלים |

And the Lord afflicted Pharoah
with a severe (lit; plague) illness
and (also) his household,
because of the matter of Abram's wife Sarai. |
וינגע יהוה את פרעה
נגעים גדלים
ואת ביתו
על דבר שרי אשת אברם |

| 18 |
And Pharoah called (to) Abram,
and said:
What is this you have done to me ?
Why did you not tell me
that she was your wife ? |
ויקרא פרעה לאברם
ויאמר
מה זאת עשית לי
למה לא הגדת לי
כי אשתך הוא |

| 19 |
Why did you say:
She is my sister ?
and (so) I took her to me
as a wife;
and now,
here is your wife,
take (her) and go. |
למה אמרת
אחתי הוא
ואקח אתה לי
לאשה
ועתה
הנה אשתך
קח ולך |

| 20 |
And Pharoah gave orders about him to (his) men;
and they escorted him on the way,
with his wife,
and all he had. |
ויצו עליו פרעה אנשים
וישלחו אתו
ואת אשתו
ואת כל אשר לו |
