 And Abram went up
from Egypt,
he, and his wife,
and everything he had,
and Lot with him,
to the South. |

And Abram was very rich
in cattle,
and in silver and gold. |

And he went on his journeys
from the South and up to Beth El,
up to the place
where his tent had been
originally,
between Beth El and Ai; |
וילך למסעיו
מנגב ועד בית אל
עד המקום

up to the place of the altar
which he had made there
at first;
and Abram called there
on the Lord by name. |

And also to Lot,
who went with Abram,
were
sheep and cattle,
and tents. |

And the land was not able to bear them,
living together,
for their possessions were many,
and they could not live together. |
ולא נשא אתם הארץ
לשבת יחדו
כי היה רכושם רב
ולא יכלו לשבת יחדו |

And there were quarrels
between Abram's cattle herders
and between Lot's cattle herders;
and the Canaanite and the Perizzite
lived then in the land. |
ויהי ריב
בין רעי מקנה אברם
ובין רעי מקנה לוט
והכנעני והפרזי
אז ישב בארץ |

And Abram said to Lot:
Please, don't let there be strife
between me and you,
and between your herders and my herders;
for we are (lit; brothers) family. |
ויאמר אברם אל לוט
אל נא תהי מריבה
ביני וביניך
ובין רעי ובין רעיך
כי אנשים אחים אנחנו |

See, the whole land
is before you.
Please separate from me;
if (you go to) the left,
I will (go to) the right;
and if (you go to) the right,
I will (go to) the left. |
הלא כל הארץ
לפניך
הפרד נא מעלי
אם השמאל
ואימנה
ואם הימין
ואשמאילה |

And Lot looked about,
and saw
all the Jordan plain,
which was well irrigated,
before the Lord destroyed
Sodom and Gomorrah,
like the Lord's garden,
like the land of Egypt,
towards Zoar. |
וישא לוט את עיניו
וירא
את כל ככר הירדן
כי כלה משקה
לפני שחת יהוה
את סדם ואת עמרה
כגן יהוה
כארץ מצרים
באכה צער |

And Lot chose for himself
all the Jordan plain;
and Lot travelled east;
and they separated
from each other. |
ויבחר לו לוט
את כל ככר הירדן
ויסע לוט מקדם
ויפרדו
איש מעל אחיו |

And Abram lived
in the land of Canaan,
and Lot lived
in the cities of the plain
and moved his tents to Sodom. |
אברם ישב
בארץ כנען
ולוט ישב
בערי הככר
ויאהל עד סדם |

The men of Sodom
were evil and sinned
greatly against the Lord. |
ואנשי סדם
רעים וחטאים
ליהוה מאד |

And the Lord said to Abram,
after Lot had left him:
Please look about,
and see from this place
where you are,
to the north and to the south,
and to the east and to the west; |
ויהוה אמר אל אברם
אחרי הפרד לוט מעמו
שא נא עיניך
וראה מן המקום
אשר אתה שם
צפנה ונגבה
וקדמה וימה |

for all the land
which you see,
I will give to you,
and to your descendants
for ever. |
כי את כל הארץ
אשר אתה ראה
לך אתננה
ולזרעך
עד עולם |

And I will make your descendants
like the dust of the earth;
so that
if one could number
the dust of the earth,
so your descendants will be numbered. |
ושמתי את זרעך
כעפר הארץ
אשר
אם יוכל איש למנות
את עפר הארץ
גם זרעך ימנה |

Get up,
walk through the land
along it's length and it's breadth;
for I will give it to you. |
קום
התהלך בארץ
לארכה ולרחבה
כי לך אתננה |

And Abram moved his tent,
and came,
and lived
by the terebinths of Mamre,
which are in Hebron,
and built there
an altar to the Lord.
