1 Commentaries בראשית, לך לך (Lech Lecha (Get thee out) - the third Portion in Genesis) אחר הדברים האלה After these events היה דבר יהוה אל אברם the word of the Lord (came) to Abram במחזה in a vision, לאמר saying: אל תירא אברם Abram, do not be afraid, אנכי מגן לך I am your protector, שכרך הרבה מאד your reward will be very great. 2 Commentaries ויאמר אברם And Abram said: אדני יהוה Lord G-d, מה תתן לי what will You give me, ואנכי הולך ערירי I am (going) childless, ובן משק and the major-domo ביתי of my household הוא דמשק אליעזר is Eliezer of Damascus ? And Abram said ויאמר אברם Lord G-d אדני יהוה what will You give me מה תתן לי I am (going) childless ואנכי הולך ערירי and the major-domo ובן משק of my household ביתי is Eliezer of Damascus הוא דמשק אליעזר ב
3 Commentaries ויאמר אברם And Abram said: הן לי לא נתתה זרע Now, to me You have not given children, והנה בן ביתי and here one born in my house יורש אתי will be my heir. 4 Commentaries והנה דבר יהוה אליו And now the word of the Lord came to him, לאמר saying: לא יירשך זה This (man) shall not be your heir, כי אם אשר יצא but the one to come ממעיך from your bowels הוא יירשך shall be your heir. And now the word of the Lord came to him והנה דבר יהוה אליו saying לאמר This (man) shall not be your heir לא יירשך זה but the one to come כי אם אשר יצא from your bowels ממעיך shall be your heir הוא יירשך ד
5 Commentaries ויוצא אתו And He brought him החוצה to the outside, ויאמר and said: הבט נא Look now השמימה toward the heavens, וספר הכוכבים and count the stars, אם תוכל לספר אתם if you can count them; ויאמר לו and He said to him: כה יהיה זרעך So shall your descendants be. And He brought him ויוצא אתו to the outside החוצה and said ויאמר Look now הבט נא toward the heavens השמימה and count the stars וספר הכוכבים if you can count them אם תוכל לספר אתם and He said to him ויאמר לו So shall your descendants be כה יהיה זרעך ה

7 Commentaries ששי (Start of sixth aliyah) ויאמר אליו And He said to him: אני יהוה I am the Lord אשר הוצאתיך that brought you out מאור כשדים of Ur of the Chaldees, לתת לך to give you את הארץ הזאת this land לרשתה to inherit it. 8 Commentaries ויאמר And he said: אדני יהוה O Lord G-d במה אדע by what shall I know כי אירשנה that I shall inherit it ? And he said ויאמר O Lord G-d אדני יהוה by what shall I know במה אדע that I shall inherit it כי אירשנה ח
9 Commentaries ויאמר אליו And He said to him: קחה לי take (for) Me עגלה משלשת a three year old heifer, ועז משלשת and a three year old (female) goat, ואיל משלש and a three year old ram, ותר וגוזל and a turtle dove, and a young pigeon. 10 Commentaries ויקח לו את כל אלה And he took all these, ויבתר אתם and divided them בתוך in (the) middle, ויתן and put איש בתרו each half לקראת רעהו against the other; ואת הצפר but the birds לא בתר he did not divide. 12 Commentaries ויהי And it was, השמש לבוא that as the sun was going down, ותרדמה נפלה על אברם Abram lost consciousness, והנה אימה and also dread, חשכה גדלה like a great darkness, נפלת עליו came upon him. 13 Commentaries ויאמר לאברם And He said to Abram: ידע תדע You will surely know כי גר that a stranger יהיה זרעך will your descendants be בארץ לא להם in a land not of theirs, ועבדום and will serve them; וענו אתם and be afflicted by them ארבע מאות שנה four hundred years. 14 Commentaries וגם את הגוי And also that nation, אשר יעבדו whom they will serve, דן אנכי will I judge; ואחרי כן יצאו and afterwards they will came out ברכש גדול with considerable wealth. 15 Commentaries ואתה תבוא But you shall go אל אבתיך to your fathers בשלום in peace; תקבר you will be buried בשיבה טובה at a good old age. But you shall go ואתה תבוא to your fathers אל אבתיך in peace בשלום you will be buried תקבר at a good old age בשיבה טובה טו
16 Commentaries ודור רביעי And the fourth generation ישובו הנה will return to here; כי לא שלם for (it is) not complete עון האמרי the iniquity of the Amorite עד הנה until then. 17 Commentaries ויהי And it was, השמש באה as the sun went down, ועלטה היה and there was thick darkness, והנה and there was, תנור עשן a smoking furnace, ולפיד אש and a flaming torch אשר עבר which passed בין הגזרים האלה between these pieces. 18 Commentaries ביום ההוא In that day כרת יהוה את אברם ברית the Lord made a convenant with Abram, לאמר saying: לזרעך To your descendants נתתי את הארץ הזאת I have given this land, מנהר מצרים from the river of Egypt עד הנהר הגדל to the great river, נהר פרת the Euphrates river. In that day ביום ההוא the Lord made a convenant with Abram כרת יהוה את אברם ברית saying לאמר To your descendants לזרעך I have given this land נתתי את הארץ הזאת from the river of Egypt מנהר מצרים to the great river עד הנהר הגדל the Euphrates river נהר פרת יח
