 Now Sarai, Abram's wife,
did not bear (any children) to him;
and she had an Egyptian maidservant,
Hagar by name. |

And Sarai said to Abram:
See now,
the Lord has stopped me
from bearing;
please go to my maidservant;
maybe I will build (a family) through her.
And Abram listened
to Sarai's (words) voice. |
ותאמר שרי אל אברם
הנה נא
עצרני יהוה
מלדת
בא נא אל שפחתי
אולי אבנה ממנה
וישמע אברם
לקול שרי |

And Sarai, Abram's wife, took
Hagar the Egyptian,
her maidservant,
at the end of ten years
after Abram had lived
in the land of Canaan,
and she gave her
to Abram her husband
to be his wife. |
ותקח שרי אשת אברם
את הגר המצרית
שפחתה
מקץ עשר שנים
לשבת אברם
בארץ כנען
ותתן אתה
לאברם אישה
לו לאשה |

And he went to Hagar,
and she conceived;
and (when) she saw
that she had conceived,
her mistress was despised
in her eyes. |
ויבא אל הגר
ותהר
ותרא
כי הרתה
ותקל גברתה
בעיניה |

And Sarai said to Abram:
My wrong (will be) upon you;
I gave my maidservant
into your keeping;
and (when) she saw
that she had conceived,
I was despised in her eyes;
the Lord judge
between me and you. |
ותאמר שרי אל אברם
חמסי עליך
אנכי נתתי שפחתי
בחיקך
ותרא
כי הרתה
ואקל בעיניה
ישפט יהוה
ביני וביניך |

And Abram said to Sarai:
See now, your maidservant is in your charge;
do to her
whatever seems right to you;
and Sarai treated her harshly,
and she fled from her. |
ויאמר אברם אל שרי
הנה שפחתך בידך
עשי לה
הטוב בעיניך
ותענה שרי
ותברח מפניה |

And an angel of the Lord found her
by a fountain of water
in the desert,
by the fountain
on the way to Shur. |
וימצאה מלאך יהוה
על עין המים
במדבר
על העין
בדרך שור |

And he said:
Hagar, Sarai's handmaid,
from where did you come ?
and where are you going ?
And she said:
From my mistress Sarai
I am fleeing. |
ויאמר
הגר שפחת שרי
אי מזה באת
ואנה תלכי
ותאמר
מפני שרי גברתי
אנכי ברחת |

And the angel of the Lord said to her:
Return to your mistress,
and submit yourself
to her charge. |
ויאמר לה מלאך יהוה
שובי אל גברתך
והתעני
תחת ידיה |

And the angel of the Lord said to her:
I will greatly multiply
your descendants,
they will not be able to be numbered
from (their) abundance. |
ויאמר לה מלאך יהוה
הרבה ארבה
את זרעך
ולא יספר

And the angel of the Lord said to her:
See, you are pregnant,
and will have a son;
and you will call his name Ishmael,
because the Lord has heard
of your troubles. |
ויאמר לה מלאך יהוה
הנך הרה
וילדת בן
וקראת שמו ישמעאל
כי שמע יהוה
אל עניך |

And he shall be
a wild ass of a man;
his hand (will be) against every one,
and the hand of everyone against him;
and in front of all his brethren
he will live. |
והוא יהיה
פרא אדם
ידו בכל
ויד כל בו
ועל פני כל אחיו

And she called by name (on) the Lord
that spoke to her:
You are the (all) seeing G-d;
for she said:
did I really see
what I saw ? |
ותקרא שם יהוה
הדבר אליה
אתה אל ראי
כי אמרה
הגם הלם ראיתי
אחרי ראי |

For this the well was called
''well of the life that sees'';
and it is between Kadesh
and Bered. |
על כן קרא לבאר
באר לחי ראי
הנה בין קדש
ובין ברד |

And Hagar bore Abram
a son,
and Abram called
the name of his son,
whom Hagar bore,
Ishmael. |
ותלד הגר לאברם
בן
ויקרא אברם
שם בנו
אשר ילדה הגר
ישמעאל |

And Abram
was (aged) eighty six years,
when Hagar bore Ishmael
to Abram.
