 And Abram was
ninety nine years of age,
and the Lord appeared to Abram,
and said to him:
I am G-d Almighty;
walk before me,
and be whole-hearted. |
בראשית, לך לך
 ויהי אברם
בן תשעים שנה ותשע שנים
וירא יהוה אל אברם
ויאמר אליו
אני אל שדי
התהלך לפני

And I will make my covenant
between Me and you,
and I will multiply (your descendants) greatly. |
ואתנה בריתי
ביני ובינך
וארבה אותך במאד מאד |

And Abram fell on his face;
and G-d talked with him,
saying: |
ויפל אברם על פניו
וידבר אתו אלהים
לאמר |

| 4 |
As for Me,
see, My covenant is with you,
and you shall be
the father of many nations. |
אני
הנה בריתי אתך
והיית
לאב המון גוים |

| 5 |
Your name will not be called Abram any more,
but your name will be Abraham;
for a father of many nations
have I made you. |
ולא יקרא עוד את שמך אברם
והיה שמך אברהם
כי אב המון גוים
נתתיך |

| 6 |
And I will make you very fruitful,
and I will make (from) you nations,
and kings will come from you. |
והפרתי אתך במאד מאד
ונתתיך לגוים
ומלכים ממך יצאו |

(Start of seventh aliyah)
And I will set up my covenant
between Me and you,
and between your descendants after you,
for all their generations,
an everlasting covenant,
to be for you (your) G-d,
and to your descendants after you. |
שביעי
והקמתי את בריתי
ביני ובינך
ובין זרעך אחריך
לדרתם
לברית עולם
להיות לך לאלהים
ולזרעך אחריך |

And I will give to you,
and to your descendants after you,
the land where you lived,
all the land of Canaan,
for an everlasting possession;
and I will be for them (their) G-d. |
ונתתי לך
ולזרעך אחריך
את ארץ מגריך
את כל ארץ כנען
לאחזת עולם
והייתי להם לאלהים |

And G-d said to Abraham:
As for you,
keep my covenant,
you, and your descendants after you,
for all their generations. |
ויאמר אלהים אל אברהם
ואתה
את בריתי תשמר
אתה וזרעך אחריך

This is My covenant,
which you will keep,
between Me and you,
and between your descendants after you;
circumcise (among) you
every male. |
זאת בריתי
אשר תשמרו
ביני וביניכם
ובין זרעך אחריך

| 11 |
And you will circumcise
the flesh of your foreskin;
and it will be (for) a sign of the covenant
between Me and you. |
ונמלתם
את בשר ערלתכם
והיה לאות ברית

One (who is) eight days old
will be circumcised among you,
every male
for all your generations,
born to your house,
or bought for money
from any foreigner,
that is not (one of) your descendants. |
ובן שמנת ימים
ימול לכם
כל זכר
לדרתיכם

ומקנת כסף
מכל בן נכר
אשר לא מזרעך הוא |

He must be circumcised,
the one born to your house,
and the one bought with your money;
and My covenant shall be
in your flesh
for an everlasting covenant. |

| 14 |
The uncircumcised male
who did not have circumcised
the flesh of his foreskin,
that soul shall be cut off
from his people;
he has broken My covenant.

And G-d said
to Abraham:
As for Sarai your wife,
you will not call her name Sarai,
but Sarah (shall be) her name. |
ויאמר אלהים
אל אברהם
שרי אשתך
לא תקרא את שמה שרי
כי שרה שמה |

| 16 |
I will bless her,
and also I will give you a son from her;
indeed, I will bless her,
and she will be (mother) of nations;
kings of peoples
will come from her. |
וברכתי אתה
וגם נתתי ממנה לך בן
וברכתיה
והיתה לגוים
מלכי עמים
ממנה יהיו |

Then Abraham fell on his face,
and laughed;
and said in his heart:
To one of a hundred years old
shall (a child) be born ?
Or shall Sarah,
who is ninety years old,
bear ? |
ויפל אברהם על פניו
ויצחק
ויאמר בלבו
הלבן מאה שנה

ואם שרה
הבת תשעים שנה

And Abraham said
to G-d:
Oh that Ishmael might live before You ! |
ויאמר אברהם
אל האלהים
לו ישמעאל יחיה לפניך |

And G-d said:
No, Sarah your wife
will bear you a son;
and you will call his name Isaac;
and I will set up my covenant
with him
for an everlasting covenant
to his descendants after him. |
ויאמר אלהים
אבל שרה אשתך
ילדת לך בן
וקראת את שמו יצחק
והקמתי את בריתי
אתו
לברית עולם
לזרעו אחריו |

And as for Ishmael,
I have heard you;
now, I have blessed him,
and I will make him fruitful,
and multiply him greatly;
twelve princes
will he bear
and I will make him a great nation. |
ולישמעאל
שמעתיך
הנה ברכתי אתו
והפריתי אתו
והרביתי אתו במאד מאד
שנים עשר נשיאם
יוליד
ונתתיו לגוי גדול |

But my covenant
will I set up with Isaac,
whom Sarah will bear to you
at this same time
next year. |
ואת בריתי
אקים את יצחק
אשר תלד לך שרה
למועד הזה
בשנה האחרת |

And He finished talking with him,
and G-d went up
from Abraham. |
ויכל לדבר אתו
ויעל אלהים
מעל אברהם |

And Abraham took
Ishmael his son,
and all born in his house,
and all bought (with) his money,
every male
among the men of Abraham's house,
and circumcised
the flesh of their foreskin
in the very same day,
as G-d had said to him. |

את ישמעאל בנו
ואת כל ילידי ביתו
ואת כל מקנת כספו
כל זכר
באנשי בית אברהם
וימל
את בשר ערלתם
בעצם היום הזה

(Start of maftir aliyah)
And Abraham
was ninety-nine years old,
when he was circumcised
in the flesh of his foreskin. |

was thirteen years old,
when he was circumcised
in the flesh of his foreskin. |

In that very same day
was Abraham circumcised,
and Ishmael his son. |
בעצם היום הזה

And all the men of his house,
born in his house,
and bought with money
from a foreigner
were circumcised with him.
