3 Commentaries ויאמר and said: אדני My Lord, אם נא מצאתי חן if I have found favour בעיניך in your sight, אל נא תעבר please do not pass by, מעל עבדך away from your servant. and said ויאמר My Lord אדני if I have found favour אם נא מצאתי חן in your sight בעיניך please do not pass by אל נא תעבר away from your servant מעל עבדך ג

5 Commentaries ואקחה פת לחם And I will fetch some bread, וסעדו לבכם and stay (fill) your heart; אחר תעברו afterwards carry on; כי על כן עברתם since you have already come על עבדכם to your servant. ויאמרו And they said: כן תעשה So do, כאשר דברת as you have said. 6 Commentaries וימהר אברהם And Abraham hurried האהלה to the tent, אל שרה to Sarah, ויאמר and said: מהרי Make ready quickly שלש סאים three measures קמח סלת of fine flour, לושי knead it, ועשי עגות and make cakes. 7 Commentaries ואל הבקר רץ אברהם And Abraham ran to the herd, ויקח בן בקר and fetched a calf, רך וטוב tender and good, ויתן אל הנער and gave (it) to the lad; וימהר and he hurried לעשות אתו to prepare it. 10 Commentaries ויאמר And he said: שוב אשוב אליך I will definitely come back to you כעת חיה at this time of life; והנה בן לשרה אשתך and see, your wife Sarah will have a son. ושרה שמעת And Sarah heard פתח האהל from the tent's entrance, והוא אחריו which (was) behind him. 11 Commentaries ואברהם ושרה Now Abraham and Sarah זקנים were old, באים בימים advanced in age, חדל there had ceased להיות לשרה to be with Sarah ארח כנשים the normal way (periods) of women. 12 Commentaries ותצחק שרה And Sarah laughed בקרבה inwardly, לאמר saying: אחרי בלתי After I have grown old היתה לי עדנה shall I have pleasure, ואדני זקן my lord (also) being old ? 13 Commentaries ויאמר יהוה אל אברהם And the Lord said to Abraham: למה זה צחקה שרה Why did Sarah laugh now, לאמר saying: האף אמנם אלד Will I really bear a child, ואני זקנתי and I am old ? And the Lord said to Abraham ויאמר יהוה אל אברהם Why did Sarah laugh now למה זה צחקה שרה saying לאמר Will I really bear a child האף אמנם אלד and I am old ואני זקנתי יג
14 Commentaries היפלא מיהוה דבר Is anything too hard for the Lord ? למועד At the stated time אשוב אליך I will come back to you, כעת חיה at this time of life, ולשרה בן and Sarah will have a son. 15 Commentaries שני (Start of second aliyah) ותכחש שרה Then Sarah denied, לאמר saying: לא צחקתי I didn't laugh; כי יראה because she was afraid. ויאמר And He said: לא כי צחקת No, you did laugh. 16 Commentaries ויקמו משם האנשים And the men got up from there, וישקפו על פני סדם and looked over towards Sodom; ואברהם הלך עמם and Abraham went with them לשלחם to send them on the way. 18 Commentaries ואברהם היו יהיה for Abraham will definitely become לגוי גדול ועצום a great and mighty nation, ונברכו בו and in him will be blessed כל גויי הארץ all the earth's nations ? for Abraham will definitely become ואברהם היו יהיה a great and mighty nation לגוי גדול ועצום and in him will be blessed ונברכו בו all the earth's nations כל גויי הארץ יח
19 Commentaries כי ידעתיו For I have known him, למען אשר יצוה so that he will command את בניו ואת ביתו his children and his household אחריו after him, ושמרו דרך יהוה and they will keep the way of the Lord, לעשות to do צדקה ומשפט charity and justice; למען הביא יהוה so the the Lord may bring על אברהם on Abraham את אשר דבר עליו what He spoke to him. For I have known him כי ידעתיו so that he will command למען אשר יצוה his children and his household את בניו ואת ביתו after him אחריו and they will keep the way of the Lord ושמרו דרך יהוה to do לעשות charity and justice צדקה ומשפט so the the Lord may bring למען הביא יהוה on Abraham על אברהם what He spoke to him את אשר דבר עליו יט
20 Commentaries ויאמר יהוה And the Lord said: זעקת סדם ועמרה כי רבה the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is so great, וחטאתם and their sins כי כבדה מאד are so (serious) heavy. And the Lord said ויאמר יהוה the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is so great זעקת סדם ועמרה כי רבה and their sins וחטאתם are so (serious) heavy כי כבדה מאד כ
21 Commentaries ארדה נא I will go down now, ואראה and see הכצעקתה if as the cry הבאה אלי that came to me עשו they have done כלה - destruction - ואם לא and if not, אדעה I will know. 22 Commentaries ויפנו משם האנשים And the men turned away from there, וילכו סדמה and went towards Sodom; ואברהם עודנו עמד but Abraham still stood לפני יהוה before the Lord. 24 Commentaries אולי יש Perhaps there are חמשים צדיקם fifty righteous בתוך העיר in the city; האף תספה will You really sweep away ולא תשא למקום and not forgive the place למען חמשים הצדיקם for the sake of the fifty righteous אשר בקרבה that are there ? 25 Commentaries חללה לך It is not right for You מעשת כדבר הזה to do this thing, להמית to kill צדיק עם רשע the righteous with the wicked, והיה כצדיק כרשע so that the righteous (are treated) like the wicked; חללה לך it is not right for You; השפט כל הארץ shall the Judge of all the earth לא יעשה משפט not do justice ? It is not right for You חללה לך to do this thing מעשת כדבר הזה to kill להמית the righteous with the wicked צדיק עם רשע so that the righteous (are treated) like the wicked והיה כצדיק כרשע it is not right for You חללה לך shall the Judge of all the earth השפט כל הארץ not do justice לא יעשה משפט כה
26 Commentaries ויאמר יהוה And the Lord said: אם אמצא בסדם If I find in Sodom חמשים צדיקם fifty righteous בתוך העיר within the city, ונשאתי then I will forgive לכל המקום all the place בעבורם for their sake. And the Lord said ויאמר יהוה If I find in Sodom אם אמצא בסדם fifty righteous חמשים צדיקם within the city בתוך העיר then I will forgive ונשאתי all the place לכל המקום for their sake בעבורם כו
27 Commentaries ויען אברהם And Abraham answered, ויאמר and said: הנה נא See now, הואלתי לדבר I have taken on myself to speak אל אדני to the Lord, ואנכי עפר ואפר and I am but dust and ashes. And Abraham answered ויען אברהם and said ויאמר See now הנה נא I have taken on myself to speak הואלתי לדבר to the Lord אל אדני and I am but dust and ashes ואנכי עפר ואפר כז
28 Commentaries אולי יחסרון Perhaps there will be missing חמשים הצדיקם חמשה five of the fifty righteous; התשחית בחמשה will You destroy (because) of five את כל העיר the whole city ? ויאמר And He said: לא אשחית I will not destroy, אם אמצא שם if I find there ארבעים וחמשה forty five. Perhaps there will be missing אולי יחסרון five of the fifty righteous חמשים הצדיקם חמשה will You destroy (because) of five התשחית בחמשה the whole city את כל העיר And He said ויאמר I will not destroy לא אשחית if I find there אם אמצא שם forty five ארבעים וחמשה כח
29 Commentaries ויסף עוד לדבר אליו And he carried on speaking to Him, ויאמר and said: אולי ימצאון שם ארבעים Perhaps (only) forty will be found there. ויאמר And He said: לא אעשה I will not do it בעבור הארבעים for the sake of the forty. And he carried on speaking to Him ויסף עוד לדבר אליו and said ויאמר Perhaps (only) forty will be found there אולי ימצאון שם ארבעים And He said ויאמר I will not do it לא אעשה for the sake of the forty בעבור הארבעים כט
30 Commentaries ויאמר And he said: אל נא יחר לאדני Please, let not the Lord be angry, ואדברה and I will speak. אולי ימצאון שם Perhaps there will be found there שלשים thirty. ויאמר And He said: לא אעשה I will not do it, אם אמצא שם שלשים if I find there thirty. 31 Commentaries ויאמר And he said: הנה נא See now, הואלתי לדבר I have taken on myself to speak אל אדני to the Lord, אולי ימצאון שם perhaps there will be found there עשרים twenty. ויאמר And He said: לא אשחית I will not destroy בעבור העשרים for the sake of the twenty. 32 Commentaries ויאמר And he said: אל נא יחר לאדני Please, let not the Lord be angry, ואדברה and I will speak אך הפעם just this once. אולי ימצאון שם Perhaps there will be found there עשרה ten. ויאמר And He said: לא אשחית I will not destroy בעבור העשרה for the sake of the ten.
