2 Commentaries ויאמר and he said: הנה נא אדני See now, my lords, סורו נא please turn aside, אל בית עבדכם to your servant's house, ולינו and stay the night, ורחצו רגליכם and wash your feet, והשכמתם and you can get up early, והלכתם לדרככם and go on your way. ויאמרו And they said: לא No, כי ברחוב נלין for we will stay in the street. and he said ויאמר See now, my lords הנה נא אדני please turn aside סורו נא to your servant's house אל בית עבדכם and stay the night ולינו and wash your feet ורחצו רגליכם and you can get up early והשכמתם and go on your way והלכתם לדרככם And they said ויאמרו No לא for we will stay in the street כי ברחוב נלין ב
3 Commentaries ויפצר בם מאד And he pressed them greatly; ויסרו אליו and they turned in to him, ויבאו אל ביתו and entered into his house; ויעש להם משתה and he made them a feast, ומצות אפה and baked unleavened bread, ויאכלו and they ate. 4 Commentaries טרם ישכבו Before they laid down, ואנשי העיר the men of the city, אנשי סדם the men of Sodom, נסבו על הבית surrounded the house, מנער ועד זקן both young and old, כל העם מקצה all the people from every quarter. 8 Commentaries הנה נא See now, לי שתי בנות I have two daughters, אשר לא ידעו איש that have not known man; אוציאה נא אתהן please, I will bring them out אליכם to you, ועשו להן and do to them כטוב בעיניכם whatever appears good to you; רק לאנשים האל only to these men אל תעשו דבר don't do anything; כי על כן באו for they have come בצל קרתי under the shadow (protection) of my roof. 9 Commentaries ויאמרו And they said: גש הלאה Stand back. ויאמרו And they said: האחד בא לגור This one came to stay, וישפט שפוט and to make judgements; עתה נרע לך now we will deal worse with you, מהם than with them. ויפצרו באיש בלוט מאד And they pressed heavily on the man, on Lot, ויגשו and approached לשבר הדלת to break the door. 11 Commentaries ואת האנשים And the men, אשר פתח הבית that (were at) the house entrance, הכו בסנורים they struck with blindness, מקטן ועד גדול both small and great; וילאו so that they wearied themselves למצא הפתח to find the entrance. 12 Commentaries ויאמרו האנשים אל לוט And the men said to Lot: עד מי לך פה Are there any others with you here ? חתן The son-in-law, ובניך ובנתיך and your sons and daughters, וכל אשר לך בעיר and everyone you have in the city; הוצא מן המקום bring (them) out of the place; And the men said to Lot ויאמרו האנשים אל לוט Are there any others with you here עד מי לך פה The son-in-law חתן and your sons and daughters ובניך ובנתיך and everyone you have in the city וכל אשר לך בעיר bring (them) out of the place הוצא מן המקום יב
13 Commentaries כי משחתים אנחנו for we will destroy את המקום הזה this place, כי גדלה צעקתם for their cries have grown את פני יהוה before the Lord; וישלחנו יהוה and the Lord sent us לשחתה to destroy it. for we will destroy כי משחתים אנחנו this place את המקום הזה for their cries have grown כי גדלה צעקתם before the Lord את פני יהוה and the Lord sent us וישלחנו יהוה to destroy it לשחתה יג
14 Commentaries ויצא לוט And Lot went out, וידבר אל חתניו and spoke to his sons-in-law, לקחי בנתיו who married his daughters, ויאמר and he said: קומו צאו Up ! Get out מן המקום הזה of this place; כי משחית יהוה for the Lord will destroy את העיר the city. ויהי כמצחק But he seemed as one who jokes בעיני חתניו in the eyes of his sons-in-law. And Lot went out ויצא לוט and spoke to his sons-in-law וידבר אל חתניו who married his daughters לקחי בנתיו and he said ויאמר Up ! Get out קומו צאו of this place מן המקום הזה for the Lord will destroy כי משחית יהוה the city את העיר But he seemed as one who jokes ויהי כמצחק in the eyes of his sons-in-law בעיני חתניו יד
15 Commentaries וכמו השחר עלה And as daybreak came, ויאיצו המלאכים בלוט the angels hurried Lot, לאמר saying: קום Up ! קח את אשתך Take your wife, ואת שתי בנתיך and your two daugthers הנמצאת that are here; פן תספה otherwise you will be caught up בעון העיר in the wickedness of the city. And as daybreak came וכמו השחר עלה the angels hurried Lot ויאיצו המלאכים בלוט saying לאמר Up קום Take your wife קח את אשתך and your two daugthers ואת שתי בנתיך that are here הנמצאת otherwise you will be caught up פן תספה in the wickedness of the city בעון העיר טו
16 Commentaries ויתמהמה But he hesitated; ויחזקו האנשים בידו and the men took hold of his hand, וביד אשתו and the hand of his wife, וביד שתי בנתיו and the hand of his daughters; בחמלת יהוה עליו the Lord being merciful to him; ויצאהו and they brought him out, וינחהו and left him מחוץ לעיר outside the city. But he hesitated ויתמהמה and the men took hold of his hand ויחזקו האנשים בידו and the hand of his wife וביד אשתו and the hand of his daughters וביד שתי בנתיו the Lord being merciful to him בחמלת יהוה עליו and they brought him out ויצאהו and left him וינחהו outside the city מחוץ לעיר טז
17 Commentaries ויהי And it was, כהוציאם אתם when they had brought them החוצה out; ויאמר he said: המלט על נפשך Escape for your life; אל תביט אחריך don't look back, ואל תעמד and don't stay בכל הככר anywhere on the Plain; ההרה המלט to the mountains escape, פן תספה otherwise you will be swept away. And it was ויהי when they had brought them כהוציאם אתם out החוצה he said ויאמר Escape for your life המלט על נפשך don't look back אל תביט אחריך and don't stay ואל תעמד anywhere on the Plain בכל הככר to the mountains escape ההרה המלט otherwise you will be swept away פן תספה יז
18 Commentaries ויאמר לוט אלהם And Lot said to them: אל נא אדני Please, not so my Lord; And Lot said to them ויאמר לוט אלהם Please, not so my Lord אל נא אדני יח
19 Commentaries הנה נא see now, מצא עבדך חן your servant has found favour בעיניך in your sight ותגדל and you have magnified חסדך your mercy, אשר עשית עמדי which you have shown to me להחיות את נפשי in saving my life; ואנכי לא אוכל להמלט ההרה and I can't escape to the mountain, פן תדבקני הרעה in case the evil catches me, ומתי and I die. see now הנה נא your servant has found favour מצא עבדך חן in your sight בעיניך and you have magnified ותגדל your mercy חסדך which you have shown to me אשר עשית עמדי in saving my life להחיות את נפשי and I can't escape to the mountain ואנכי לא אוכל להמלט ההרה in case the evil catches me פן תדבקני הרעה and I die ומתי יט
20 Commentaries הנה נא See now, העיר הזאת קרבה this city is near לנוס שמה to flee to, והוא מצער and it is small; אמלטה נא שמה please let me escape to there, הלא מצער הוא after all, it is only small, ותחי נפשי and my soul (I) will live. 21 Commentaries רביעי (Start of fourth aliyah) ויאמר אליו And he said to him: הנה נשאתי פניך I have accepted your request גם לדבר הזה about this matter also, לבלתי הפכי I will not overthrow את העיר the city אשר דברת that you spoke of. 22 Commentaries מהר Hurry ! המלט שמה Escape to there; כי לא אוכל לעשות דבר for I can't do anything עד באך שמה until you have come there. על כן קרא So (see v.20 ''it is small'') they called שם העיר the name of the city צוער Zoar. 28 Commentaries וישקף And he looked out על פני סדם ועמרה toward Sodom and Gomorrah, ועל כל פני ארץ הככר and toward all the land of the Plain וירא and saw, והנה עלה קיטר הארץ that the smoke of the land went up כקיטר הכבשן like the smoke of a furnace. 29 Commentaries ויהי And it was, בשחת אלהים when G-d destroyed את ערי הככר the cities of the plain, ויזכר אלהים את אברהם that G-d remembered (his covenant with) Abraham, וישלח את לוט and sent Lot מתוך ההפכה from out of the overthrow, בהפך את הערים when He overthrew the cities אשר ישב בהן לוט in which Lot lived. And it was ויהי when G-d destroyed בשחת אלהים the cities of the plain את ערי הככר that G-d remembered (his covenant with) Abraham ויזכר אלהים את אברהם and sent Lot וישלח את לוט from מתוך ההפכה when He overthrew the cities בהפך את הערים in which Lot lived אשר ישב בהן לוט כט
30 Commentaries ויעל לוט מצוער And Lot went up away from Zoar, וישב בהר and lived in the mountain, ושתי בנתיו עמו and his two daughters with him; כי ירא because he was afraid לשבת בצוער to stay in Zoar; וישב במערה and he lived in a cave, הוא ושתי בנתיו he and his two daughters. 31 Commentaries ותאמר הבכירה And the oldest said אל הצעירה to the younger: אבינו זקן Our father is old, ואיש אין בארץ and there are not any men (left alive) in the land לבוא עלינו to come into us כדרך כל הארץ as (would) be the usual way. 32 Commentaries לכה נשקה את אבינו יין Come, let us give our father wine to drink, ונשכבה עמו and we will lie (have relations) with him, ונחיה מאבינו זרע so that there will be offspring from our father. 34 Commentaries ויהי ממחרת And on the following day ותאמר הבכירה the oldest said אל הצעירה to the younger: הן שכבתי אמש Now, I lay last night את אבי with my father. נשקנו יין Let us give (him) wine to drink גם הלילה also this night; ובאי and you come שכבי עמו and lie with him, ונחיה מאבינו זרע so that there will be offspring from our father. And on the following day ויהי ממחרת the oldest said ותאמר הבכירה to the younger אל הצעירה Now, I lay last night הן שכבתי אמש with my father את אבי Let us give (him) wine to drink נשקנו יין also this night גם הלילה and you come ובאי and lie with him שכבי עמו so that there will be offspring from our father ונחיה מאבינו זרע לד
35 Commentaries ותשקין And they served, גם בלילה ההוא that night also, את אביהן יין wine to their father. ותקם הצעירה And the younger got up, ותשכב עמו and lay with him; ולא ידע and he did not know בשכבה when she lay down, ובקמה nor when she got up. 37 Commentaries ותלד הבכירה בן And to the oldest was born a son, ותקרא שמו מואב and she called his name Moab, הוא אבי מואב he (became) the father (founder) of (the nation of) Moab עד היום of today.
