 And Abraham travelled from there
towards the land of the South,
and lived
between Kadesh and between Shur;
and he stayed in Gerar. |
בראשית, וירא
 ויסע משם אברהם
ארצה הנגב
וישב
בין קדש ובין שור

And Abraham said
about his wife Sarah:
She is my sister.
And Abimelech king of Gerar sent
and took Sarah. |
ויאמר אברהם
אל שרה אשתו
אחתי הוא
וישלח אבימלך מלך גרר
ויקח את שרה |

But G-d came to Abimelech
in a dream, at night,
and said to him:
Now, you are going to die
because of the woman
that you took;
she is a man's wife. |
ויבא אלהים אל אבימלך
בחלום הלילה
ויאמר לו
הנך מת
על האשה
אשר לקחת
והוא בעלת בעל |

Now Abimelech
had not come near her;
and he said:
Lord,
will You even slay a righteous nation ? |
ואבימלך
לא קרב אליה
ויאמר
אדני
הגוי גם צדיק תהרג |

After all, he (himself) said to me:
She is my sister;
and she, also she said:
He is my brother.
With a simple heart
and clean (innocent) hands
I did this. |
הלא הוא אמר לי
אחתי הוא
והיא גם הוא אמרה
אחי הוא
בתם לבבי
ובנקין כפי
עשיתי זאת |

And G-d said to him
in the dream:
Yes, I also knew
that innocently
you did this,
and I also stopped you
from sinning against Me.

Therefore, I did not allow you
to touch her. |
ויאמר אליו האלהים
בחלם
גם אנכי ידעתי
כי בתם לבבך
עשית זאת
ואחשך גם אנכי אותך
מחטו לי
חסר א - מחטאו
על כן לא נתתיך
לנגע אליה |

And now,
return the man's wife;
for he is a prophet,
and will pray for you,
and you will live;
and if she is not returned,
know
that you will surely die,
you and all yours. |
ועתה
השב אשת האיש
כי נביא הוא
ויתפלל בעדך
וחיה
ואם אינך משיב
דע
כי מות תמות
אתה וכל אשר לך |

And Abimelech got up early in the morning,
and called all his servants,
and told all these things
to (in their ears) them;
and the men were very afraid. |
וישכם אבימלך בבקר
ויקרא לכל עבדיו
וידבר את כל הדברים האלה
באזניהם
וייראו האנשים מאד |

And Abimelech called to Abraham,
and said to him:
What have you done to us ?
What was my sin against you,
that you brought
on me and my kingdom
a great sin ?
Actions
which should not have been done,
you did do to me. |
ויקרא אבימלך לאברהם
ויאמר לו
מה עשית לנו
ומה חטאתי לך
כי הבאת
עלי ועל ממלכתי
חטאה גדלה
מעשים
אשר לא יעשו
עשית עמדי |

And Abimelech said
to Abraham:
What did you see
to cause you to do this thing ? |
ויאמר אבימלך
אל אברהם
מה ראית
כי עשית את הדבר הזה |

And Abraham said:
Because I said to myself:
Surely, there is no fear of G-d
in this place;
and they will kill me
because of my wife. |
ויאמר אברהם
כי אמרתי
רק אין יראת אלהים
במקום הזה
והרגוני
על דבר אשתי |

And, actually, she is my sister,
my father's daughter,
but not my mother's daughter;
and she became my wife. |
וגם אמנה אחתי
בת אבי הוא
אך לא בת אמי
ותהי לי לאשה |

And so it was,
when G-d caused me to wander
from my father's house,
that I said to her:
This is your kindness
which you will do for me;
at every place
to which we come,
say of me:
He is my brother. |
ויהי
כאשר התעו אתי אלהים
מבית אבי
ואמר לה
זה חסדך
אשר תעשי עמדי
אל כל המקום
אשר נבוא שמה
אמרי לי
אחי הוא |

And Abimelech took
sheep and oxen,
men-servants and maid-servants,
and gave them to Abraham,
and returned to him
his wife Sarah. |
ויקח אבימלך
צאן ובקר
ועבדים ושפחת
ויתן לאברהם
וישב לו
את שרה אשתו |

And Abimelech said:
See now, my land is before you,
live wherever it seems good for you. |
ויאמר אבימלך
הנה ארצי לפניך
בטוב בעיניך שב |

And to Sarah he said:
See, I have given
a thousand (pieces of) silver to your brother;
now, it is for you,
a covering of the eye
(see Rashi on this)
to all with you
and to all you were with. |
ולשרה אמר
הנה נתתי
אלף כסף לאחיך
הנה הוא לך
כסות עינים
לכל אשר אתך
ואת כל ונכחת |

And Abraham prayed to G-d,
and G-d healed Abimelech,
and his wife,
and his maid-servants,
and they (bore children) were delivered. |
ויתפלל אברהם אל האלהים
וירפא אלהים את אבימלך
ואת אשתו
ואמהתיו
וילדו |

For the Lord had completely closed
up all the wombs
of (those in) Abimelech's household,
on the matter of Sarah, Abraham's wife.
