 And the (length of) Sarah's life was
one hundred and twenty and seven years,
the years of Sarah's life. |

And Sarah died in Kiriath-Arba,
which is (also called) Hebron, in the land of Canaan;
and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah,
and to weep for her. |
ותמת שרה בקרית ארבע
הוא חברון בארץ כנען
ויבא אברהם לספד לשרה
ולבכתה |

And Abraham got up from before his dead,
and spoke to the children of Heth, saying: |
ויקם אברהם מעל פני מתו
וידבר אל בני חת לאמר |

I am (both) a stranger and a resident with you,
give me the rights to a burial place with you,
so that I can bury my dead from before me. |
גר ותושב אנכי עמכם
תנו לי אחזת קבר עמכם
ואקברה מתי מלפני |

And the children of Heth answered Abraham,
saying to him: |
ויענו בני חת את אברהם
לאמר לו |

Hear us, my lord,
you are (like) a prince of G-d among us,
in (one of) our choicest burial places, bury your dead.
No one of us
will withhold his burial place from you,
for burying your dead. |
שמענו אדני
נשיא אלהים אתה בתוכנו
במבחר קברינו קבר את מתך
איש ממנו
את קברו לא יכלה ממך
מקבר מתך |

And Abraham got up and bowed
to the people of the land, and to the children of Heth. |
ויקם אברהם וישתחו
לעם הארץ לבני חת |

And he spoke with them, saying:
If it is your (opinion) decision
that I can bury my dead from before me,
hear me, and on my behalf, ask
of Ephron, Zohar's son, |
וידבר אתם לאמר
אם יש את נפשכם
לקבר את מתי מלפני
שמעוני ופגעו לי
בעפרון בן צחר |

that he should give me the cave of Machpelah,
which he has, and is at the end of his field;
he shoudl give it to me for the full (market) price,
in your midst (as witnesses), for a burial place. |
ויתן לי את מערת המכפלה
אשר לו אשר בקצה שדהו
בכסף מלא יתננה לי
בתוככם לאחזת קבר |

Ephron was sitting among the children of Heth,
and Ephron, the Hittite, answered Abraham,
in the hearing of the children of Heth,
and all that went in by the city gate, saying: |
ועפרון ישב בתוך בני חת
ויען עפרון החתי את אברהם
באזני בני חת
לכל באי שער עירו לאמר |

No, my lord, hear me,
the field I give to you,
and the cave in it, I give to you,
before (in the presence of) my people,
I am giving it to you, bury your dead. |
לא אדני שמעני
השדה נתתי לך
והמערה אשר בו לך נתתיה
לעיני בני עמי
נתתיה לך קבר מתך |

And Abraham bowed
before the people of the land. |
וישתחו אברהם
לפני עם הארץ |

And he spoke to Ephron
in the presence of the people of the land, saying:
No, (please) will you listen to me,
I (will) give the price of the field,
take (the money) from me, and I will bury my dead there. |
וידבר אל עפרון
באזני עם הארץ לאמר
אך אם אתה לו שמעני
נתתי כסף השדה
קח ממני ואקברה את מתי שמה |

And Ephron answered Abraham,
saying to him: |
ויען עפרון את אברהם
לאמר לו |

My Lord, listen to me;
a (piece of) land (worth) four hundred silver shekels,
what is that between you and me ?
Bury your dead. |
אדני שמעני
ארץ ארבע מאת שקל כסף
ביני ובינך מה הוא
ואת מתך קבר |

And Abraham listened to Ephron;
and weighed (out) to Ephron
the (sum of) silver, which he (requested) mentioned
in the presence of the children of Heth,
four hundred silver shekels,
good (accepted as current) for transactions. |
וישמע אברהם אל עפרון
וישקל אברהם לעפרן
את הכסף אשר דבר
באזני בני חת
ארבע מאות שקל כסף
עבר לסחר |

(Start of second aliyah)
And so became (was transferred), Ephron's field,
which was in Machpelah, by Mamre;
the field and the cave in it,
and all the trees in the field
and which bordered all around the field, |

ויקם שדה עפרון
אשר במכפלה אשר לפני ממרא
השדה והמערה אשר בו
וכל העץ אשר בשדה
אשר בכל גבלו סביב |

to Abraham for a possession,
in the presence of (witnessed by) the children of Heth,
and before all that went in at the gate of his city. |
לאברהם למקנה

And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife,
in the cave of the field of Machpelah, by Mamre
- which is Hebron -
in the land of Canaan. |
ואחרי כן קבר אברהם את שרה אשתו
אל מערת שדה המכפלה על פני ממרא
