 (Genesis - the first Portion in Genesis)
 Now the serpent
was more subtle
than all the beasts of the field
which the Lord G-d had made;
and he said to the woman:
Indeed, did G-d say:
Do not eat
from any tree of the garden ? |

And the woman said
to the serpent:
Of the fruit
of the tree(s) of the garden
we may eat; |
ותאמר האשה
אל הנחש
מפרי
עץ הגן
נאכל |

but from the fruit of the tree
which (is) inside the garden,
G-d said:
Do not eat of it
and do not touch it,
in case you die. |
ומפרי העץ
אשר בתוך הגן
אמר אלהים
לא תאכלו ממנו
ולא תגעו בו

And the serpent said
to the woman:
You will definitely not die ! |
ויאמר הנחש
אל האשה
לא מות תמתון |

For G-d knows
that on the day
you eat from it
then your eyes shall be opened,
and you shall be as G-d,
knowing good and evil. |
כי ידע אלהים
כי ביום
אכלכם ממנו
ונפקחו עיניכם
והייתם כאלהים
ידעי טוב ורע |

And (when) the woman saw
that the tree (was) good for food,
and that it (was) a delight
to the eyes,
and that the tree (was) to be desired
to make (one) wise,
she took of its' fruit,
and ate;
and she gave also to her husband with her,
and he ate. |
ותרא האשה
כי טוב העץ למאכל
וכי תאוה הוא
לעינים
ונחמד העץ
להשכיל
ותקח מפריו
ותאכל
ותתן גם לאישה עמה

And the eyes of both of them were opened,
and they knew
that they were naked,
and they sewed (together)
fig-leaves
and made themselves aprons. |
ותפקחנה עיני שניהם
וידעו
כי עירמם הם
ויתפרו
עלה תאנה
ויעשו להם חגרת |

And they heard
the voice of the Lord G-d
walking in the garden
towards the cool of the day;
and the man and his wife hid themselves
from the presence of the Lord G-d
among the tree(s) of the garden. |
וישמעו
את קול יהוה אלהים
מתהלך בגן
לרוח היום
ויתחבא האדם ואשתו
מפני יהוה אלהים
בתוך עץ הגן |

And the Lord G-d called
to the man
and said to him:
Where are you ? |
ויקרא יהוה אלהים
אל האדם
ויאמר לו

And he said:
I heard Your voice in the garden
and I was afraid
because I (was) naked;
and I hid myself. |
ויאמר
את קלך שמעתי בגן
ואירא
כי עירם אנכי
ואחבא |

And He said:
Who told you
that you (was) naked ?
From the tree
which I commanded you
that you should not eat from it,
have you eaten ? |
ויאמר
מי הגיד לך
כי עירם אתה
המן העץ
אשר צויתיך
לבלתי אכל ממנו

And the man said:
The woman
whom You gave (to be) with me,
she gave me
from the tree
and I ate. |
ויאמר האדם
האשה
אשר נתתה עמדי
הוא נתנה לי
מן העץ
ואכל |

And the Lord G-d said
to the woman:
What is this you have done ?
And the woman said:
The serpent beguiled me,
and I ate. |
ויאמר יהוה אלהים
לאשה
מה זאת עשית
ותאמר האשה
הנחש השיאני
ואכל |

| 14 |
And the Lord G-d said
to the serpent:
Because you have done this,
you are cursed
from among all the cattle,
and from among all beast of the field;
upon your belly you shall go,
and dust you shall eat
all the days of your life. |
ויאמר יהוה אלהים
אל הנחש
כי עשית זאת
ארור אתה
מכל הבהמה
ומכל חית השדה
על גחנך תלך
ועפר תאכל
כל ימי חייך |

And I will put enmity
between you
and between the woman,
and between your seed
and between her seed;
it (her descendants) shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise its' heel.

To the woman He said:
I will greatly multiply
your pain and your travail;
in pain you shall bear children;
and to your husband
(shall be) your desire,
and he shall rule over you.

ואל אישך
תשוקתך
והוא ימשל בך

And to Adam He said:
Because you listened
to the voice of your wife,
and have eaten from the tree
(of) which I commanded you, saying:
You shall not eat of it;
cursed (is) the ground
for your sake;
in toil shall you eat (of) it
all the days of your life. |
ולאדם אמר
כי שמעת
לקול אשתך
ותאכל מן העץ
אשר צויתיך לאמר
לא תאכל ממנו
ארורה האדמה
בעבורך
בעצבון תאכלנה
כל ימי חייך |

Thorns also and thistles
shall it bring out to you;
and you shalt eat
the herb of the field. |
וקוץ ודרדר
תצמיח לך
ואכלת
את עשב השדה |

In the sweat of your face
shall you eat bread,
till you return
to the ground;
for out of it you was taken:
for you are dust,
and to dust you shall return. |
בזעת אפיך
תאכל לחם
עד שובך

כי ממנה לקחת

ואל עפר תשוב |

And the man called
the name of his wife Eve;
because she was
the mother of all living. |
ויקרא האדם

And the Lord G-d made
for Adam and for his wife
skin garments,
and clothed them.

And the Lord G-d said:
Behold, the man has become
like one of us,
to know good and evil;
and now,
in case he puts out his hand,
and also takes from the tree of life,
and eats,
and lives for ever. |

ולקח גם מעץ החיים

Therefore the Lord G-d sent him out
from the garden of Eden
to work the ground
from which he was taken. |
וישלחהו יהוה אלהים
מגן עדן
לעבד את האדמה
אשר לקח משם |

So He drove out the man;
and He placed
at the east of the garden of Eden
the Cherubim,
and the flaming sword which turned every way,
to guard the way to
the tree of life.
