 (Genesis - the first Portion in Genesis)
 And the man (had relations with) knew
his wife Eve;
and she conceived,
and bore Cain;
and she said:
I have been given (lit; bought) a man
with (the help of) G-d. |

And again she bore
his brother, Abel;
and Abel was a shepherd,
but Cain was
working the ground. |
ותסף ללדת
את אחיו את הבל
ויהי הבל רעה צאן
וקין היה

And after a period of time,
Cain brought
from the fruit of the ground
an offering for the Lord. |
ויהי מקץ ימים
ויבא קין
מפרי האדמה
מנחה ליהוה |

And Abel also brought
from the first born of his sheep
and of their fat;
and the Lord had respect
for Abel and to his offering; |
והבל הביא גם הוא
מבכרות צאנו
ומחלבהן
וישע יהוה
אל הבל ואל מנחתו |

but to Cain
and to his offering
He had no respect.
And Cain was very angry
and (lit; his face fell) was dismayed. |
ואל קין
ואל מנחתו
לא שעה
ויחר לקין מאד
ויפלו פניו |

And the Lord said to Cain:
Why are you angry ?
and why are you dismayed ? |
ויאמר יהוה אל קין
למה חרה לך
ולמה נפלו פניך |

If you do well,
will not it (your face) be lifted up ?
And if you do not do well
sin crouches (waits) at the door;
and to you is its desire,
but you can control it. |
הלוא אם תיטיב
שאת
ואם לא תיטיב
לפתח חטאת רבץ
ואליך תשוקתו
ואתה תמשל בו |

And Cain spoke to his brother Abel;
and when they were in the field,
Cain came up
against his brother Abel,
and killed him. |
ויאמר קין אל הבל אחיו
ויהי בהיותם בשדה
ויקם קין
אל הבל אחיו
ויהרגהו |

And the Lord said to Cain:
Where (is) your brother Abel ?
And he said:
I don't know;
am I my brother's (lit; guardian) keeper ? |
ויאמר יהוה אל קין
אי הבל אחיך
ויאמר
לא ידעתי
השמר אחי אנכי |

And He said: What have you done ?
The voice of your brother's blood
cries to Me
from the ground. |
ויאמר מה עשית
קול דמי אחיך
צעקים אלי

And now, you are cursed
from the ground,
which opened its' mouth
to receive
your brother's blood
from your hand. |
ועתה ארור אתה
מן האדמה
אשר פצתה את פיה
לקחת
את דמי אחיך

| 12 |
When you work
the ground,
it will not (from now) give its' strength to you;
a fugitive and a wanderer
you will be in the earth. |
כי תעבד
את האדמה
לא תסף תת כחה לך
נע ונד
תהיה בארץ |

| 13 |
And Cain said to the Lord:
My punishment is too great to bear. |
ויאמר קין אל יהוה
גדול עוני מנשוא |

| 14 |
As You have driven me out this day
from upon the face of the land;
and from Your face
will I hide;
and I will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth;
and it will be,
whoever finds me,
will kill me. |
הן גרשת אתי היום
מעל פני האדמה
ומפניך
אסתר
והייתי נע ונד בארץ
והיה
כל מצאי
יהרגני |

And the Lord said to him:
So, (on) whoever kills Cain,
will (come) a sevenfold vengeance.
And the Lord set a sign on Cain,
so he will not be struck
by any (who) find him. |
ויאמר לו יהוה
לכן כל הרג קין
שבעתים יקם
וישם יהוה לקין אות
לבלתי הכות אתו
כל מצאו |

And Cain went out
from before the Lord,
and dwelt in the land of Nod,
on the east of Eden. |
ויצא קין
מלפני יהוה
וישב בארץ נוד

And Cain (had relations with) knew his wife
and she conceived,
and bore Enoch;
and he built a city,
and called the name of the city
after the name of his son, Enoch. |
וידע קין את אשתו
ותהר
ותלד את חנוך
ויהי בנה עיר
ויקרא שם העיר
כשם בנו חנוך |

And to Enoch was born Irad,
and Irad had (a son) Mehujael,
and Mehujael had (a son) Methushael,
and Methushael had (a son) Lamech. |
ויולד לחנוך את עירד

ומתושאל ילד את למך |

And Lamech took for himself
two wives,
one (was) called Adah,
and the second was called Zillah. |
ויקח לו למך
שתי נשים
שם האחת עדה
ושם השנית צלה |

And Adah bore Jabal,
he was
the father of the tent dwellers
and (keepers of) cattle. |
ותלד עדה את יבל
הוא היה
אבי ישב אהל

And his brother's name (was) Jubal,
he was
the father of all players
of harp and pipe. |
ושם אחיו יובל
הוא היה
אבי כל תפש
כנור ועוגב |

And Zillah, also bore Tubal-cain,
forger of every (tool for) cutting
of copper (brass) and iron,
and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah. |
וצלה גם הוא ילדה את תובל קין

נחשת וברזל
ואחות תובל קין נעמה |

And Lamech said to his wives:
Adah and Zillah,
Hear my voice;
wives of Lamech,
listen (to what) I say;
for I have killed a man
for wounding me,
and a youth for bruising me. |
ויאמר למך לנשיו
עדה וצלה
שמען קולי
נשי למך
האזנה אמרתי
כי איש הרגתי
לפצעי
וילד לחברתי |

If Cain will be avenged sevenfold,
then to Lamech seventy seven. |
כי שבעתים יקם קין
ולמך שבעים ושבעה |

And Adam again (had relations with) knew his wife;
and she bore a son
and called his name Seth;
for, G-d has appointed me
another seed
in place of Abel,
that Cain killed. |
וידע אדם עוד את אשתו
ותלד בן
ותקרא את שמו שת
כי שת לי אלהים
זרע אחר
תחת הבל
כי הרגו קין |

And also to Seth,
was born a son;
and he called his name Enosh;
then (men) began to call
on the name of the Lord.
